Visiting Almunecar

A holiday resort with a lot of attractions

Almunecar attracts its tourists on the Costa Tropical with its unique spirit. This Spanish holiday resort comes with a very interesting past: in the 8th century BC it belonged to the Phoenicians. The Romans came after the Phoenicians, but lost the town in favor of the Moors; the Christians took it from the Moors in the 15th century and all these influences have left their imprint on all aspects of life in Almunecar.

When you visit the resort, it is natural to be attracted by the welcoming beaches: Playa de San Cristobal and Playa Puerta del Mar are the most popular ones. However, Almunecar tourists don’t choose the resort just for its beaches; they also choose it for the wonderful monuments and museums that wait to be discovered. Castillo de San Miguel guards the resort from up above. The castle was built at the end of the 15th century on the ruins of a fort dating back to the Roman era.

Tourists can visit the rooms of the castle, as well as the collection of relics which were excavated in the surroundings of the resort. For those who are really passionate about history, the Almunecar Archaeological Museum patiently awaits them with a collection of relics dating back to 3,500 years ago.

Other attractions in Almunecar

The pottery is another very important attraction of this resort; it is called Alfareria del Castillo and it offers tourists the chance to buy objects with a design inspired from the archaeological objects found in Almunecar.

The Roman Aqueduct, built in the 1st century, deserves your attention; you will find it very close to the town, just outside the resort. If you want a breath of fresh air, the perfect place for you is Majuelo. Majuelo is both a park and a botanical garden, displaying the biggest collection of sub-tropical botanical species in Europe.

The nightlife is active throughout the entire summer season, always ready to entertain tourists with different types of activities. You can either choose a bar situated along the Playa Puerta del Mar where you can have a nice drink and taste the famous tapas while listening to traditional music, or choose a restaurant.

Restaurants in Almunecar serve delicious dishes; if you like fish, go to Calabra. For those who like to experiment, choose La Galeria, which serves non-conformist dishes. Enjoy Almunecar!

When you first set foot in Cordoba, the atmosphere that surrounds you is impressive; the old air of the city is still sensed through its streets and the abundance of monuments that come to stay proof of the beauty which ruled over the city in the past is overwhelming.

Cordoba was occupied, in the 11th century, the place of one of the capitals in Europe which had a hard word to say. A holiday in Almerimar

Searching for the perfect holiday destination

It is true that when summer comes, there is a madding crowd starting to desperately search for the perfect holiday destination. The majority of the crowd choose Spain because it is a country so diverse in landscape and culture that there is something on offer for every taste.

Starting with modern and very futuristic cities; continuing with the traditional villages; the high peaks of the mountains and the calm waters and finishing with the fascinating traditions and customs of the country, It would be difficult to not find somewhere in Spain that matches your holiday requirements.

One of the most frequented Spanish locations on the tourist circuit is Almerimar. This luxurious beach resort is situated close to the very famous town of El Ejido, one of the most prosperous places in Andalusia.

With over 64,000 acres of land dedicated to the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, the export market to Northern Europe has brought wealth to a population which was around 2,000 in 1980 but has now grown to 50,000, employing over 10,000 immigrant workers annually.

Almerimar and its attractions

Almerimar has a lot to offer with its subtropical climate boasting 300 days of sun every year with an average temperature which is never lower than 18.5°C. There are few purpose-built, modern resorts like Almerimar in the whole of Europe and it stands out like an oasis with a backdrop of dry, desert landscape.

Curiously in every direction you can see snow capped mountains for seven months of the year whilst enjoying sunbathing on the 7 kilometres of clean, golden beaches. In addition, the waters of the sea are very calm, crystal clear and shallow so they are perfect for swimming even for small children.

Those tourists who prefer activity in their holiday can practice one of the many water sports available, as Almerimar offers great conditions for surfing, diving and snorkelling. Awarded the European Blue Flag for the great conditions and facilities on its beaches, Almerimar is a wonderful place to spend your holiday.  There is a new golf course, a marina, fishing harbour and Nature Park all worth visiting.

Just a one and half hour, mostly motorway drive from Almerimar is the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, so you could spend the morning skiing and the afternoon relaxing on the beach.  How many places can you think of that offer this diversity?  You can be assured of a memorable holiday in Almerimar.

The history of some beautiful places

Beautiful places on earth

Spain is definitely a country that people love; it is one of those countries that has a little to offer to any type of tourist, whether he or she loves the mountain, the sea, the modern cities or the remote traditional villages. In the summer time, during the peak season, the favourite destinations are those on the seaside.

How can you not choose Spain as your holiday destination when it has so many beautiful, sunny coasts and sandy beaches large enough for everybody? The Balearic Islands are the ideal destination for a seaside holiday, as they are very beautiful, lively and sunny.

They are the perfect destination for a young couple or for a family with small children, even a place where those who have already lived their youth can go. The Balearic Islands are a place you can choose as your holiday destination without any fears.

The history of the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands have a very interesting history. Tourists are always fascinated by the findings dating back to pre-historical times. Menorca is the island that has the record for pre-historical findings; no less than 500 of them were discovered here.

The impressive stone constructions represent the most important attraction of the island, as it is thought that they used to serve for religious ceremonies and rituals. Of great importance for the Balearic Islands is the fact that many civilizations left their fingerprints on all their corners: the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Carthaginians and even the Moors.

They each ruled over the islands at one moment in the past, shaping them to fit their expectations and demands. Their history is tumultuous, similar to the history of many Spanish provinces. For example, Mallorca had a very important year in 1229, when Jaime I conquered it; 1234 is another important year for Mallorca, because it became part of the wonderful province of Aragon. Menorca also became a part of Aragon in 1231.

The island will be one of your favourites after you visit it because it is one of the most beautiful ones. The forts, built to guard it from the numerous attacks of the pirates also represent important sightseeing spots. Ibiza was under the rule of the Carthaginians, while Formentera was ruled by the Moors. As you see, each island has a history of its own, so visit all of them in order to make a fantastic incursion into their past.

The excursions near Pamplona

Pamplona and its offers

You probably have heard about Pamplona as an important city for the Spanish bullfighting tradition. It is true, the city is struggling to keep alive a tradition which is on the verge of dying, but it also has a wide range of other activities to keep you occupied and entertained throughout the entire period of your holiday. First of all, the Valleys found in the East of Pamplona represent an important place for a one day trip. The Roncal and Salazar Valleys are the most renowned; they are both absolutely spectacular, because the green valleys are surrounded from all sides by high mountain peaks. Ochagavia is a traditional and very romantic village hosted by the beautiful Salazar Valley famous for a Basilica built in a Romanesque style in the 13th century. The medieval Javier Castle should also be a monument on your sightseeing list, because it is the place where Saint Francisco Javier was born.

The South of Pamplona

Tafalla is located just 35 kilometers from Pamplona and it is the place where tourists can visit the beautiful and luxurious palaces belonging to the Feria Marquis and to the Guendulain Count. The Bardenas Reales Natural Park is a destination for those who are in love with nature. The park will impress you with breathtaking and at the same time bizarre views of a desert like landscape which seems to spread on more than 400 square kilometers.

Estella

Estella is a very old town founded more than 900 years ago. Estella is of unimaginable historical importance for Spain and Spaniards, as it hosts the famous Palaces belonging to the Navarra Kings. History is not the only important aspect of Estella, because cuisine is as important as history, especially for tourists. The gourmet seeking tourists will feel like they are in heaven in Estella, because the range of traditional dishes is very wide.

Saint James’ Way

Of great importance for the religious tourists, Saint James’ Way attracts pilgrims from all the corners of the world and it does it every year. The medieval Chapel is an important attraction for the pilgrim way because it is a place where pilgrims who unfortunately died along the way from various causes are buried. Puente la Reina is the Spanish village which is thought to be among the most beautiful that the country has; the 11th century bridge is what you should not miss in Puente la Reina.

The amazing Camino de Santiago

A unique experience

The principal and main purpose of the Camino is to participate in the pilgrimage to the remains of Saint James, who is thought to be buried in the Cathedral in Santiago. However, you do not necessarily have to be a very religious person to follow the route.

In the last years, especially the young tourists discovered that it is a perfect way to socialize with people from different corners of the world. It is also a great way to get into contact with the northern part of Spain, to see its wonders, to connect with its inhabitants and to get to know its customs and traditions.

The road takes about five weeks if you decide to follow it from the France border right to Santiago; some decide to follow it only on certain parts. By foot, five weeks are necessary; if you travel by bike; you will probably need two weeks.

Getting to know the country

When you follow the Santiago Route, you have the unique opportunity to understand the essence of northern Spain by visiting the amazing and noble cities Burgos and Leon, renowned for their cathedrals.

You also have the fantastic opportunity to see parts of the Pyrenees Mountains and the famous La Rioja region, the wine country. The landscapes are breathtaking; you have the chance to see scenic views which will nourish your eyes and soul.

Having fun

Your reward is the amazing Santiago Cathedral, which waits for her guests with an outstanding Baroque Façade. Those who followed the route in 2010 had a wonderful surprise: 2010 was the Xacobeo year, a cultural year throughout which concerts were held in the entire northern region. The concerts were for all tastes: religious music, pop, jazz, even rock.

The 25th of July is a wonderful day, a fun day on which you have to participate: it is the national day of the famous province of Galicia. After you take part in the mass, you can enjoy a wonderful “botafumeiro”, a burner which will swing above your head.

On arrival, it is a tradition to enter a Santiago tavern and try the tasty seafood dishes containing clams and octopus. The journey ends in the famous Obradoiro Square, where the pilgrims slowly lean against the imposing pillars impressed by the beauty of the Cathedral. You cannot completely understand the feeling unless you participate at least once in this unique experience.

Spending Quality time in Algorfa

A Spanish holiday in Algorfa

The famous Costa Blanca is the one that hosts the charming village of Algorfa. The village has the cultivation of citruses as its main occupation, exactly like most of the villages situated on the Costa Blanca.

The citrus cultivation is possible due to the fact that the valleys of the Segura River are among the most fertile in the country. Even though the village is small, you will find there one of the richest architectural and cultural heritages in Spain and its inhabitants are very friendly and welcoming people, always happy to receive visitors.

The history of the village

The Neolithic Era is the time when Algorfa began to be inhabited; an Orihuela archeologist discovered the first evidences that sustain this theory in 1903: tools and even human remains dating back to 3000 BC.

Algorfa officially became a village in 1328 with the help of Alfonso II. During the centuries the village suffered a lot of damage but Carlos IV ordered its restoration.

Algorfa today

The Algorfa that waits for you today is a place where you will find very welcoming people, open hearted, always prepared with a smile to offer to you. You will also be welcomed by a very friendly Mediterranean climate with temperatures which do not go under 19 degrees any day of the year.

The village is formed of a fantastic Square where you can visit the village’s Church and the amazing Town Hall. The police station is also hosted in the Main Square which also represents the location where the fiestas and the traditional Spanish celebrations take place.

If you are interested in sightseeing, do not limit yourself to the square; also go to Rojales to see the cave dwellings and the Palace belonging to the Fontabla Marquis. The Mata y Torrevieja Park is also worth your interest.

Having fun in Algorfa

Algorfa is definitely a place for active persons; the village has a spectacular recreation centre where tourists can practice swimming and tennis, even squash. Children also have an area dedicated to their needs and entertainment.

Golfers will also be happy as an 18 holes course is situated in a very picturesque location surrounded by lakes. Even though the village has no beaches, you will find some spectacular ones in its vicinity.

Just visit the village, let yourself be surrounded by the traditional Spanish spirit and spend a fantastic holiday.

Spectacular Festivals in Pamplona

Visiting Pamplona

It is true that Spain is a beautiful country and it is also true that it is one of the most visited countries in the world. However, problems appear for those tourists who want to have it as a holiday destination but do not know which village, which town or which big city to choose. Well, in the attempt to help you, I strongly recommend Pamplona. Pamplona is a town full of history and culture, a town that has succeeded in combining the old and the new harmoniously.

The monuments, the cuisine and the surroundings are beautiful but the festivals are absolutely unique. You probably know that Pamplona is associated with the unique tradition of bullfighting. This is why the San Fermin festival is also the most important for the town. The festival attracts thousands of tourists and participants every year and it also attracts millions of spectators who stay in front of the TV in order to see the full of adrenaline spectacle of running of bulls along the streets of the town.

The festival is a harsh one because every year blood and tears appear, but the tradition is continued because the festival is part of the cultural heritage of the country. The running ends at the place where the bullring is situated and the evening hosts some of the most interesting corridas that take place throughout the entire year.

Traditions of the country

The festival was always kept on July 7th with no exceptions; it is a rule that the inhabitants want to keep, because it is their way to identify with the festival and their idea of keeping it alive. However, the show does not end on the evening of July 7th because the entire week is packed with parties which involve a lot of good music and dancing as well as drinking.

The 25th of May hosts another important festival for Pamplona, this time a festival that celebrates the old regional dances; people call it Baile de la Era and Estella is the spectacular village that hosts it. The 24th of June brings the day of celebration for pilgrims who meet in big groups in front of a cave in Yanci in order to take a purifying bath.

Religious persons think that the water can heal different types of illnesses. Pamplona is a wonderful town in Spain, one that has to be on your list at least once in your lifetime, so make sure you visit it!

When you travel to the amazing Barcelona, there are a few sights that you must have in mind if you really want to say that you had the opportunity to visit the city. There are some places in Barcelona which definitely must stay on your sightseeing list as long as you wish to capture the essence of the city. The first of them is La Sagrada Familia; the overwhelming beautiful architectural work of Antoni Gaudi is a symbol of Barcelona, even though it is not finished yet. If you climb one of its towers, you get a clear picture regarding the beauty of the monument as well as some amazing views of the city. The La Rambla pedestrian boulevard is another place that you have to visit, a place where you will feel the presence of the street performers, the colors and the joy of the city. Continuing the journey

The Montjuic gardens are a must see, a place where you can run away from the noise of the busy city and enjoy the beautiful scents of the flower bouquets. Tourists can also enjoy the view towards the Mediterranean Sea from one of the many Botanical Gardens and have the opportunity to use the romance of the surrounding area in order to spend some pleasant moments with their loved ones. Lots of fun in Roquetas de mar

The perfect holiday destination

For those who are looking for a holiday destination which is relaxing, but a destination that can also offer a wide range of entertaining activities bathed in a warm and pleasant climate, Roquetas de Mar is absolutely perfect. Roquetas de Mar is a seaside resort situated on the Mediterranean coast and it represents one of the most famous and at the same time popular holiday destinations in the region due to the wonderful climate that it enjoys all year long. Its popularity is also due to its spectacular location which offers breathtaking views: Roquetas de Mar stands by the sea and is surrounded by high mountains which seem to guard its peace and quiet. The 13 kilometres of beaches are accompanied by kilometres of promenade flanked with palm trees which offer a beautiful scent and the perfect setting for a romantic walk, especially in the evenings when tourists love to watch the sunset. A big advantage of Roquetas de Mar is represented by its beaches, which offer great conditions for tourists of all types; most of the beaches in Roquetas have been designated the European Blue Flag as a recognition of the fact that they are extremely well equipped and maintained. Some of these beaches are very crowded in summer when the peak season arrives. Among the crowded beaches, Aguadulce and La Bajadilla are the most famous ones.

The attractions of Roquetas de Mar

The beaches represent the top attraction in Roquetas de Mar. It seems like they are according to the taste of every single tourist as a result of their quality. Besides the crowded beaches, Roquetas also has one beach which is entirely protected, a beach that was kept unspoilt by man, a paradise for divers. Playa de Cerillos is this wild beach and it is protected by law as it is part of the nature reserve known as Punta Estinas Sabinar. La Ventilla and Playa de Bajos are the two beaches where Windsurfers go and besides the wind that helps them surf, the beaches have the big advantage of not being too crowded. The Amazing Pamplona

True wonders of Spain

Pamplona is the type of city that can contradict anyone who says that it is impossible to have a modern medieval town. Well, in Pamplona, this is definitely possible. It is the type of city that knew how to combine the old with the new. It managed to keep the old in the spotlight which created a special atmosphere that attracts tourists.

The bullfights

Spain’s probably most renowned tradition is represented by the bullfights. Bullfights are always full of passion and adrenaline; characteristics that attract the public. Pamplona has a special place called Plaza de Toros that is dedicated to this tradition. However, the Plaza de Toros seems to be on the verge of disappearance. This plaza is actually the bullring where all the fights take place, including the special fights which are part of the San Fermin festival. Plaza de Castillo is located very close to the bullring; this square is the place where all the bullfights were hosted until 1893. It is a place full of history, a place of great importance for this unique tradition of Spain.

Visiting the Cathedral

Those who visit Pamplona have to visit the Gothic Cathedral; if you don’t see the Cathedral, you know nothing about Pamplona. The wonderful monument was built between the 14th and the 16th century, but it has a breathtaking façade which displays Neoclassical elements dating back to the 18th century.

Pamplona’s parks

In order to run away from the city’s agitation, spend a few pleasant hours in one of Pamplona’s parks. The Tejera Park hosts the beautiful Archiepiscopal Palace, while the Santo Domingo Park is situated very close to the town hall, a monument which has a special façade displaying a unique Baroque style.

Burgos and La Taconera

Pamplona was originally formed out of three towns, or Burgos, which weren’t at peace with one another. Each town had its churches, which can still be visited today: San Cenin, San Nicolas and last but not least, Santo Domingo. La Taconera is a park that hosts a series of monuments which are dedicated to many famous personalities.

The Citadel

The Citadel should also be on your sightseeing list when you visit Pamplona, as it is an overwhelming fortification dating back to the 18th century, used at present for all types of concerts and even exhibitions. Enjoy the city of Pamplona.

The Towns of Mijas

There aren’t many people that are aware of this fact, but Mijas actually consists of three towns, not just one. The first one is called Mijas Pueblo and is located up the mountain side. The second called Las Lagunas is a more modern part than the first and focuses on commercial activities. The third one is Mijas Consta, located just 12 kilometers down the coast. These three parts are actually governed by the mayor of Mijas.
Even in the spring and wintertime horseracing services are organized weekly in the Hipodromo of the Costal del Sol. They are organized mainly for Sunday mornings and Saturday evenings. Not interested in watching the horses or have grown tired of it? No worry, you can also find plenty of quality restaurants and bars. Or why not, take a few horse riding lessons?

Mijas Costa

We can find in Mijas Costa the following components: El Chaparral, Calahonda, Sitio de Calahonda and Riviera del Sol. Just a little way down from the old town of Mijas Pueblo we find Mijas Costa, a much more modern section. The town features lots of fun activities for its tourists. You can choose to rent a whole vacation property on the beach, such as the villas, or stay at a hotel near the beach. Whatever you choose, you will have access to the beach and all the services available there. You can go surfing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, boating, or why not, just swim and practice other water sports.
The Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda are two amazing, large villages that feature supermarkets, bars, golf courses, hotels, restaurants and lots of places to go shopping. It will be very easy for you to get around in this part if you are an English speaker; this section of Mijos is accustomed to a lot of tourist attention.

Mijas Pueblo

The town of Mijas Pueblo features wonderful tourist attractions. Amazing gardens, fortress walls, nice streets and building architecture, they can all be found here. A large number of writers and artists from around the world have chosen to settle in Mijas Pueblo. This area features the most traditional way of living in the whole region. Many craftsmen reside in this place, selling amazing handmade paintings, pottery and other items. Instead of bringing the same old souvenirs home from your travels, you can choose to bring an amazing work of art this time.

THE SPANISH PUERTO RICO

Everything about the resort

The Spanish Puerto Rico is located on the Gran Canaria Island and it has turned over the years into a family holiday resort. It is a very nice holiday destination for young families with small children because the facilities are perfect for them. The two beaches that wait for you all year long have been built with the purpose of delighting you with the finest sands; you can let your children play in the water here, because it is very calm, as the beaches are very well-protected by the bay. One of the two beaches has the sand imported right from the Sahara Desert, while the other one, Playa de Amadores brings its sand from the Caribbean. The two marinas offer a wide range of entertaining activities: cruises and trips are available, as well as ferries that can take you to Anguineguin or to Puerto de Mogan; a day in Puerto de Mogan, a coquettish fishing town, is recommended, as the place still has the traditional Spanish spirit. You can lie on the beach, eat in one of the restaurants or go on the Yellow Submarine in order to discover the wreck under the water. The Submarine is a very interesting experience, especially for the little ones.

Back to Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is wonderful for practicing water sports such as sailing, windsurfing or scuba diving. When you get bored with these, you can go shopping in one of the shopping centers: Centro Civico, Europa, and Agua la Perra. The nightlife is very active for a family resort; the range of restaurants is very diverse, starting with the well known McDonalds where children love to eat and finishing with the romantic French restaurants where you can dine with your husband or wife after the kids go to sleep. These romantic restaurants are situated very close to the bay, offering wonderful views of the yacht marina.
